There are records of a place of worship on this site as far back as Norman times. Through the centuries, generations of villagers have been sustained and reassured by its solid presence and by the pealing of its bells.
The Church of St Mary and St Gabriel plays an important role in the daily life of the village. It brings people together, celebrating events both local and national, and marking the passing of the seasons with religious ceremonies and celebrations. It also bears witness to our significant rites of passage, (baptism, marriage, and burial) that provide the framework of our lives, both personal and as a community.
Maintenance of this beautiful, historic, building is expensive, and you don’t need to be a worshipper to imagine the impact on village life were we to allow the church to fall into disrepair.
The aim of the ‘Friends’ is to make sure that the fabric of the Church, the Old School Room and associated areas are maintained in a good state of repair for the benefit of the villagers and visitors who come to enjoy the tranquillity it inspires.
You can help us make a difference by joining the Friends of Stoke Gabriel Church. Membership is open to everyone.
‘Friends’ events are publicised in the Parish Magazine, on posters displayed around the village, via e-mail circulation, and on the village Facebook groups, Stoke Gabriel Good Neighbours, and Stoke Gabriel Church.
The membership fee is a minimum of £10 per person, or £15 for a couple living at the same address, payable when joining. Renewal subscriptions are due each January. Your membership of the ‘Friends’ will make a valued contribution to the preservation of our beautiful church and will also provide you with the added advantage of access to social activities throughout the year.
