Stoke Gabriel FC are one of the most successful local clubs in recent years and run teams from Under 11’s to Under 18s plus two senior sides. Our First Team play in the South West Peninsula League Premier East Division and Reserves play in Division One of the South Devon League.
Our Under 18s play in the Devon Youth League and we have five teams playing in the Torbay Pioneer League.
Formed in the early 1900’s, Stoke Gabriel Football Club had relied on the generosity of local farmers to provide a ground during which the changing rooms remained in the village where both the schoolroom and an old army hut were utilised.
In 1981 the club purchased land in Broadley Lane and developed a sloping field into our current home, the Speedwell Kia G.J. Churchward Memorial Ground, named in honour of the Great Western Railway Chief Engineer who was born in Stoke Gabriel. The ground was officially opened in 1984 with a visit from Torquay United.
The opening of the new ground coincided with the most successful era of the club during which the South Devon League Premier Division, the Herald Cup, and the George Belli Cup were won. We became founder members of the Devon League in 1992 and since this time have secured the League Championship twice (94-95 and 96-97), Runners-up twice, the Devon Premier Cup (93-94) and the Throgmorton Cup (97-98) and in 1993 the youth team won the Devon Cup. Recently the first team have won the SWPL East Division title in 2013-14, 2016-17 and 2018-2019.
In 2008 we secured another 9-a-side pitch within 5 minutes walk from Broadley Lane and a second full size pitch at the main ground, also pitches for 5-a-side and 7-a-side teams. We were granted planning permission to build a New Club house and changing facilities starting in 2009 and completing in earlier 2012.
As well as our ground in Broadley Lane, we have excellent changing facilities, kitchen facilities and a licensed bar where the members of the club enjoy an active social life.
